We propose a sensitive XMM-Newton survey of the grand-design Scd face-on spiral galaxy NGC 6946. This galaxy is remarkable due to its high star formation activity (e.g. the high number of recorded supernovae), its massive peculiar northern spiral arm and radio detected `magnetic arms' located between the optical arms. XMM-Newton will be used to disentangle and characterize emission from point sources and extended hot gas. These observations will also be used to further investigate the puzzling origin of the ultra-luminous emission complex MF16.
