We propose to observe five X-ray faint galaxies with secure dynamical evidence for the presence of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) and previously detected low-luminosity nuclear X-ray emission. Our primary goal is to obtain and analyze EPIC spectra of the nuclei in order to clarify the nature of the emission mechanism and compare them with more luminous systems, with each other, and with theoretical expectations. Our secondary goal is to study the thermal and chemical characteristics of hot gas in X-ray faint elliptical galaxies. Observations that are optimal for addressing these issues do not presently exist.
