As part of the XMM-Newton Performance Verification phase, observations were made of M87, a giant elliptical galaxy at the center of the Virgo Cluster. These observations include a ~60 ksec observation simultaneously using the reflection grating spectrometer (RGS) to obtain high resolution spectra of the region, and with the EPIC-MOS and PN cameras, to obtain images of the central 30' of the Virgo Cluster. A 50 ksec ultraviolet observation with the Optical Monitor was also taken at the same time as the X-ray observations. We present analysis of M87 and the inner part of the Virgo cluster in X-ray and ultraviolet. These include spectral analysis of emission from cluster gas at center of the Virgo Cluster, including a possible small scale cooling flow and enhanced emission from a large-scale ( ~8') arc-shaped region of cooler gas centered on M87, possibly caused by interaction between outflows from M87 and the hot cluster gas. High resolution RGS spectra also presented, revealing a wealth of emission lines from the central region. Analysis of the core and jet of M87 are also presented and multi-wavelength comparisons are made utilizing the simultaneous X-ray and UV data from XMM-Newton.
