The All Sky Monitor (ASM) carried by Rossi X-ray Timing Experiment (RXTE) provides a nearly continuous monitoring of the X-ray sky in the energy range of 2-12 keV. Therefore the ASM data archive presents a historical record of the X-ray sources during RXTE's lifetime (1996-2004). In this study we investigate to what degree the ASM data can be used to study variability patterns and flaring states of TeV blazars, so far the only AGN class from which TeV γ-ray emission is established. Given the long continuous coverage of the ASM instrument on many TeV sources and the easy accessibility of the data, these observations are well suited to study X-ray variability patterns on various time scales. However, ASM is not as sensitive as pointing instruments. Here, we present exhaustive correlation studies of ASM data versus the Proportional Counter Array (PCA), also carried by RXTE and the Solid state Imaging Spectrometer (SIS) onboard ASCA data, for the case of MKN 421. One subsequent goal of this study is to provide criteria on how to judge ongoing ASM observations on a given source, whether TeV follow up observations seem promising.
