SN 1006 is the prototype of supernova remnants in which the X-ray emission is dominated by synchrotron emission of cosmic-ray electrons. With XMM-Newton, the X-ray emission is spatially resolved and the spectral resolution allows to distinguish the synchrotron component from the residual thermal component. We have compared the X-ray data with radio data, to look for variations of the shape of the synchrotron component. We find strong azimuthal variations, which prove that the maximum energy reached by the electrons is larger at the bright limbs (where the magnetic field is supposedly tangential).
