In this paper, I will review the main results obtained by the X-ray observatory BeppoSAX in the field of X-ray line spectroscopy in nearby AGN. The main topics I will cover are: a) iron lines in Seyfert 1 and radio galaxies: the first observational test of the relativistic paradigm; b) soft excesses in Seyfert galaxies: the disappearance of an ``optical illusion''; c) diagnostic of the nuclear emission reprocessing in the environment of Compton-thick Seyfert 2 galaxies with soft X-ray spectroscopy; d) evidence for ionized emission lines in warm absorbers and Narrow Line Seyfert 1s: a challenge to photoionization scenarios. Although the resolution of the detectors on board BeppoSAX is slightly worse than the ASCA/SIS (8% at 6 keV), the good calibration over the unprecedentedly wide energy coverage (0.1-200 keV), has allowed many exiting new discoveries, sometimes not in agreement with ROSAT and ASCA findings. These results will be discussed in the framework of the Seyfert unification theories, which they support at first order.
