The possibility is considered of a compact X-ray source in a binary system where the companion star ejects its envelope to become a planetary nebula. The accretion rate and lifetime of such a source are determined analytically in the case where the compact object is a neutron star, and the question is examined of whether a binary system of this type is a likely consequence of stellar evolution. It is shown that the probability of forming such a source is negligible in the case of massive close binaries, slightly greater for low-mass widely separated binaries, and greatest for binary systems containing white dwarfs. Several possible coincidences between X-ray sources and planetary nebulae are identified.
