We review the properties of the X-ray emitting populations detected in the XMM-Newton major axis survey of M31. We detected a total of 730 X-ray sources with 0.3- 10 keV luminosities above ˜ 8x1034 ergs s-1 at the distance of 760 kpc. Combining the results of X-ray analysis (X-ray spectra, colors and variability) with available data at other wavelengths, we classify a significant fraction of X-ray sources as X-ray binaries, globular cluster sources, SNR, background radio galaxies, AGN and foreground objects. We present X-ray source spatial and luminosity distributions, and estimate contribution of M31 sources to the total source counts in the XMM fields. Finally, we compare X-ray source population found in M31, to the source populations detected in the normal galaxies of different morphological type.
