Chandra has revolutionized the study of X-ray binaries in nearby galaxies by allowing the detection of large populations in a wide range of galactic environments. We discuss recent results from studies of the X-ray source populations detected in nearby star-forming galaxies, with special focus on the relation between the parameters of the populations (X-ray luminosity functions, number of sources, source distribution) and galaxy parameters (galaxy type, star-forming activity etc). We also discuss the spectral and timing properties of these sources as derived from monitoring campaigns. These results are based on comprehensive studies of the X-ray source and stellar populations in a sample of nearby galaxies (including the Antennae, M81, NGC55, NGC1569, NGC4214, NGC5253 and the SMC), and they show evidence for variations of the X-ray luminosity functions of X-ray sources associated with different stellar populations.
