We present the first results from the Chandra and XMM follow-up of the Sunyaev Zel'dovich (SZ) cluster survey currently being conducted with the South Pole Telescope (SPT). The combination of measurements from the SPT and X-ray telescopes will provide a unique data set to understand thermodynamics of intra-cluster gas.
This sample includes multiple objects not previously identified as clusters of galaxies, many at high redshift, and these represent the first clusters discovered using the Sunyaev Zel'dovich effect. We present SZ/X-ray scaling relations for a sample of 15 high-significance detections from a 200 sq deg field and relate the derived X-ray mass proxies to the observed SZ flux.
