We use X-ray and optical spectral data from the SDSS and the Chandra Multiwavelength Project (ChaMP) to investigate the X-ray luminosity Lx and the X-ray spectral energy distribution of nearby galaxies, thus providing novel constraints on the HII -> Seyfert/Transition Object -> LINER -> Passive galaxy evolutionary sequence suggested by optical data. We focus on the relationship between the Eddington ratio Lx/Ledd and the X-ray spectral slope Γ for nearby AGN with z<0.392. Recent studies have shown an anti-correlation between Γ and Lx/Ledd for low redshift (low luminosity) AGN, compared with a positive correlation for high luminosity quasars. The turning point in the Γ-Lx/Ledd relation occurs near Γ 1.5 and Lx/Ledd 0.01, identical to that seen in stellar mass X-ray Binaries. This indicates that we have found empirical evidence for an intrinsic switch in the accretion mode, from advection-dominated flows to standard (disk/corona) accretion modes in SMBH accretors, similar to what has been seen and proposed in stellar mass BH systems. We introduce an expanded study using the SDSS DR7 and the Chandra Source Catalog, for a much larger sample of nearby galaxies, offering improved statistics for extensive study of the Γ-Lx/Ledd relation for AGN in the local universe, as well as a comparison to that at higher redshifts.
