Scientific paper

We propose Chandra observations of a sample of anomalously red, radio-quiet quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We select quasars that are reddened in a way that is consistent with dust extinction. Chandra observations of these targets will help us constrain the UV/optical continuum emission mechanism in quasars and understand their contribution to the hard X-ray background. Our red quasars are selected according to their optical colors relative to other quasars at the same redshift. This sample has an advantage over previous red quasar samples studied with Chandra: the color criteria are 1) homogeneous with redshift, 2) more sensitive to obscuration, and 3) able to distinguish between blue, red, and reddened quasars.
