Luna-20 samples of highland soil - primarily of anorthositic composition and containing large amounts of calcium and aluminum - were analyzed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The main result was the determination that reduction processes in the surface layers of the regolith particles lead to the formation of unoxidated forms of Fe, Ti and Si; this process is noted to be a characteristic feature of the lunar surface. The spin-doublet structure of the 2p level of Ca was examined.
