We propose Chandra ACIS observations of two nearby edge-on galaxies, NGC3556 (M108) and NGC5775, which show extended radio halos and are located at high Galactic latitudes. The spatially resolved X-ray spectroscopy of these observations will enable us to study the content, morphology, and ionization status of extraplanar hot gas as well as its role in both balancing the energy input from supernovae and shaping the galactic vertical structures. While NGC5775 is interacting with a companion, NGC3556 is an isolated galaxy. The observations will thus allow for comparison of the relative importance of galaxy-galaxy interaction and internal galactic activity in generating extraplanar hot gas.
