We present six Chandra X-ray spectra and light curves of the nova V1494 Aql (1999) in outburst. The first three observations were taken with ACIS-I on days 134, 187, and 248 after outburst. The count rates are 0.81, 0.57 and 0.44 cps, respectively. We found no significant variations in any of these observations. The spectra are dominated by emission lines originating from N, O, Ne. We fitted isothermal APEC models and found best fits with kT=0.65 keV and NH=3.3x1021 cm2. In all cases the elemental abundances of O and N had to be significantly increased for acceptable fits. On day 248 a bright soft component appeared in addition to the fading emission lines. The Chandra observations on days 300, 304, and 727 were carried out with the LETGS. On day 300 a flare occurred, and periodic oscillations can be detected in the light curves taken on days 300 and 304. The spectra consist of continuum emission and unusually strong emission lines of O and N, thus confirming the high abundances of these elements. We were not able to find any blackbody or APEC models that fit the spectrum, owing to the difficulty to disentangle continuum and emission line components from each other. A number of Cloudy models also returned unsatisfactory results. We compare the spectra extracted from the photons recorded during the flare and outside the flare and found a significant increase in the strength of all the lines and the appearance of several previously undetected lines. We compared the spectrum before and after the flare and found them to be identical. On day 727 only a count rate from the zero-th order could be derived but the source was too faint for the extraction of a spectrum.
