X-ray irradiation plays an important role in the structure of an outer accretion disk. The authors examine the outer portion of an accretion disk, carefully taking into account X-ray irradiation within the context of α-viscosity. Bimodal states observed in the X-ray sources Cyg X-1 and GX 339-4 are explained naturally in terms of an accretion disk irradiated by X-rays originating at the inner portion of the disk.
