X-rays can be used to trace the distribution of matter within the local interstellar medium, the Galaxy, and the universe at large. This paper reviews the characteristic, and energy dependent, interaction path lengths for X-rays and provides several examples of how the X-ray surface brightness constrains the distribution of hot gas responsible for the soft X-ray background and how more energetic X-rays trace the distribution of matter in the nearby universe.
