The developments in the field of X-ray detectors used in astronomy are
described here. A brief sketch of the historical developments is given,
with particular emphasis on the efforts made in the Indian context.
Results obtained from a balloon borne hard X-ray telescope and the
Indian X-ray Astronomy Experiment are also highlighted.
