Dark Matter, X-Ray, Small And Compact Galaxy Groups

Scientific paper

A summary of recent ROSAT and ASCA observations of poor groups is presented with an emphasis on mass determinations from X-ray data. Although the number of groups with detected diffuse X-ray emission is still small, some trends are beginning to become apparent. Detectable diffuse X-ray emission appears to be largely restricted to those systems with low spiral fractions. Despite a considerable range in gas mass, the range in total group mass is very small with all of the systems having a mass around ~2×1013 Msolar. The baryonic fraction of these groups is very low implying they are dominated by dark matter.
