A short (10 sec) and long (5 min) X-ray burst from GX 17+2, of maximum intensity 40% above persistent flux level, were detected. A time dependent spectral analysis of the long burst provides a consistent description of the intensity and spectral variations during the burst in terms of the luminosity (and temperature) variation of a hot blackbody (or blackbody-like) emitter. Outside the burst the blackbody component contributes 40% to the persistent emission. This result resolves ambiguity in the classification of bursts from GX 17+2 as type 1 or type 2, and indicates that, in spite of the absence of a distinct softening of the net burst emission, the bursts are due to thermonuclear flashes.
