Recent observations of high-energy (TeV-PeV) gamma rays from X-ray binaries with early-type companion stars are discussed in a general review. Topics considered include the 4.8-h periodicity in the gamma-ray emission of Cyg X-3, theoretical models of high-energy gamma-emission mechanisms, neutron-star accretion models of X-ray binaries, the characteristics of the optical companions, the importance of very energetic sources like Cyg X-3 in determining the observed cosmic-ray flux, and the use of extensive air-shower arrays to establish the ultra-high-energy spectra of such sources.
