After an historical account of the development of X-ray optics, with attention to the principles of Wolter mirror telescopes and the design and mission achievements of the HEAO-1 and -2 X-ray astronomy satellites, the Advanced X-ray Astrophysics Facility (AXAF) is described. This spacecraft comprises a fixed high resolution mirror assembly and a carousel for mounting and positioning scientific instruments in the focal plane, and incorporates two South Atlantic anomaly detectors which correct anomalous readings due to the Van Allen Belts. The AXAF telescope is composed of six nested Wolter mirrors, of which the outermost has an aperture of 1.2 m and a focal length of 10 m. An image spatial resolution of 0.5 arcsec is projected, along with an energy bandwidth of 0.1 to 8.0 keV, or 120 to 1.5 A. NASA plans the AXAF hardware development program to begin in 1984-85.
