Chandra and XMM-Newton X-ray observations of planetary nebulae (PNe) have detected diffuse X-ray emission in their interiors, indicating the existence of shocked fast stellar wind. Furthermore, FUSE far-UV observations of the O VI lines have probed the gas at the interface between the hot interior and the cool nebular shell. The physical processes at this interface (heat conduction, mass loading, turbulent mixing) govern the hot gas content and evolution of PNe. Studies of these physical processes help us understand similar objects, such as bubbles blown by Wolf-Rayet stars and superbubbles blown by young OB associations.
