Besides orbital variability, some of the supersoft X-ray sources (SSS) are highly variable on different time-scales down to weeks (or even less). The X-ray fluxes of several bright systems including the galactic source RX J0019.8+2156 have been measured at irregular intervals since the ROSAT all-sky survey (RASS). Additionally, the authors have performed a quasi-simultaneous optical and X-ray monitoring of a sample of SSS in the LMC to investigate the physical causes for the variability and to assess the evolutionary status of individual systems. The authors discuss results of these studies and their implications for different models.
