Scientific paper

The authors study X-ray and optical properties of a sample of ACO clusters of galaxies with dumbbells as the brightest cluster galaxy. They use X-ray data from the ROSAT archive and galaxy distributions taken from the COSMOS data base. The authors compute moments for the X-ray emissions and for the galaxy distributions. Based on the morphological properties of the clusters, the authors investigate possible relations between the dynamical evolution of the clusters, dumbbell systems and cD galaxies. The existence of central cooling flows is examined to test whether this phenomenon is affected by the presence of dumbbell galaxies.
