Spectra at X-ray, UV and optical wavelengths provide the values of density and temperature needed to model the IR emission of dust. Electron and ion temperatures aremost important for grain heating and sputtering, respectively, and these temperatures can be determined separately in fast shocks. In addition, the elemental abundance patterns measured and the X-ray and UV ranges can be used to infer the fraction of dust destroyed.
