Scientific paper

The current status of knowledge of X- and gamma-ray sources in the central kiloparsec of the Galaxy is briefly reviewed. The distribution of the X-ray sources which have been reported within 6 deg of the Galactic center is shown. The surface density of sources is plotted as a function of distance from the nucleus. Attention is given to the transient source A1742-289, the possibility of X-ray and gamma-ray emission from Sgr A*, and the briefly great annihilator 1E1740.7-2942.
