The angular dependence of the spectrum of secondary electrons and positrons which originate in the decay of charged pions that, in turn, are produced in the interaction of a relativistic proton beam with ambient matter. The results are applied to the quasar 3C 273 and it is shown that the X-ray emission from the jet and the gamma-ray emission from this source can be explained in terms of (1) bremsstrahlung radiation from secondary electrons and positrons, (2) radiation from inverse Compton scattering of background microwave photons by secondary electrons and positrons, and (3) radiation arising from neutral pions decay. It is deduced that the core of 3C 273 must emit a power of P roughly 2.6 x 10 to the 47th erg/s which corresponds to a mass loss of relativistic protons of roughly 0.7 solar mass/yr in the jet.
