High speed, visual and UBVRI photometry and low resolution optical spectroscopy obtained for WX Cet during its June, 1989 outburst indicate a three-week outburst duration. Superhumps of about 80-min duration constrain the orbital period of WX Cet to slightly less than this figure. In view of these determinations, the orbital periods suggested for this and other WZ Sge stars in the literature appear highly unreliable. A consideration of the defining properties of the WZ Sge and SU UMa subclasses of dwarf novae leads to the conclusion that there is no reason to retain the distinction between these groups.
