A sample of very steep spectrum radio sources in rich clusters of galaxies has been observed at 20.5 cm with the VLA and at 49 cm with the WSRT. They are typical of sources which are confined by the intergalactic medium and they represent a late stage of evolution of radio sources in which synchrotron losses dominate and expansion losses no longer occur. Their spectra are in agreement with theoretical models of evolution governed on one hand by input of energy from the nucleus of the galaxy and on the other hand by synchrotron losses (Kardashev, 1962). One important consequence can be derived from the properties of these sources. The diffusion of relativistic electrons from the radio lobes in the intergalactic medium is not the primary mode of losses during the evolution of such confined radio sources.
