Scientific paper

Aspects of coherent detection applied to optical and infrared astronomy are considered along with observations in infrared astronomy, the sun in the far infrared and sub-mm region, filter techniques in the far infrared, infrared heterodyne spectroscopy of carbon dioxide on Mars, and heterodyne spectroscopy of astronomical and laboratory sources at 8.5 micrometers using diode laser local oscillators. Attention is also given to a comparison between stellar interferometers, the Berkeley heterodyne interferometer, technological requirements associated with a shuttle-borne infrared interferometer, and an infrared astrometric interferometer. Subjects related to instrumental matters are also discussed. Individual items are announced in this issue.
