We report the discovery of a set of 55 Lyalpha-emitting candidates at the same z=2.56 redshift and within 10 Mpc of two known weak radio QSOs. The existence of a galaxy cluster at the position of the QSO pair had already been suggested as the result of the discovery by Richards etal of a feature with negative radio flux in a sensitive VLA interferometric observation of the field. The feature was interpreted as the possible signature of the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect due to the presence of a cluster along the line of sight, but the redshift of the putative cluster was not known. Broad-band deep imaging in B and I, in combination with medium-band imaging at the redshifted Lyalpha wavelength, have allowed us to identify a set of Lyalpha-emitting candidates at the redshift of the QSOs. The redshifts of 3 of the candidates were confirmed during two spectroscopic follow-up runs, one of them being a third QSO in the field, at z=2.490 and located at approx. 10 arcmin. away from the othe two. While the redshifts of the other candidates still await spectroscopic confirmation, the extant observational evidence, taken together, suggests the existence of a massive cluster at z=2.5. If confirmed, this discovery would place severe constraints on cosmological models, favoring low density models.
