Scientific paper

The paper reviews recent literature on the winter anomaly, involving anomalous absorption of radio waves in the ionospheric D-region. Consideration is given to: (1) variations of aeronomic parameters of the D-region; (2) photochemistry of the D-region; and (3) the relationship of D-region behavior to thermal, pressure, and dynamic characteristics of the stratosphere and mesosphere. Some general conclusions on the nature of the winter anomaly are presented.
