To develop a comprehensive picture of the formation and evolution of galaxies in the early Universe requires an understanding of the interplay between starburst galaxies and AGN at those redshifts. The GOODS Chandra Deep Field South contains a faint (mJy & sub-mJy) radio population that has the benefit of deep multiwavelength campaigns, of which we have obtained the radio component (the Australia Telescope Large Area Survey or `ATLAS'). Here we propose to use the resolving power of the LBA in wide-field imaging mode at 1.6 GHz to determine the nature of the radio sources in a subset of the CDFS and ATLAS fields. This will enable a study of the relative distributions of AGN and starburst galaxies, the morphologies of the AGN themselves and the rate of AGN mergers. It will also provide a study of the technical challenges (wide-field imaging, correlation needs) pertinent to the pre-SKA era.
