We present color magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of the young LMC globular cluster NGC 2214 covering a large area around the cluster. After applying stringent criteria for the selection of stars with reliable photometry, it is found that there is evidence for only one supergiant branch contrary to what has been claimed by Sagar et al. (1991). The CMD shows the presence of a single population of age approximately 9 107 yr. The field, sampled approximately 150 pc away from the cluster, has an age of approximately 2 109 yr. The field also shows the presence of a few young stars. A morphological analysis of the cluster using the XY positions obtained from the photometry shows that while the innermost parts of the cluster appear to be homogeneous, the outer parts show an east-west inhomogeneity, confirmed by a Kolmogorov-Smirnoff test at the 99% level. The number density contours show a complex behaviour in the center, showing the presence of two nuclei, while there is a lobe to the north-west of the cluster, indicating that the cluster is dynamically active. We stress that it is extremely important to take into account dynamical effects for a reliable interpretation of the various parameters obtained using CMDs.
