The decay of a fast ion-acoustic wave into another ion-acoustic wave and a whistler wave is demonstrated. The results are used to interpret wave spectra measurements in the foreshock region of the earth's bow shock. The present parametric instability is shown to account for the apparent simultaneous excitation of the ion-acoustic and whistler waves in an ion-flux event.
