The mission of the Magellan spacecraft is reviewed and the significance of anticipated information gathered through high-resolution mapping of Venus is discussed. By comparing surface maps showing tensional and compressional features and gravity maps of the interior, it is expected that scientists may be able to discern the internal circulation of Venus and therefore the forces that have shaped it. Knowledge of the interior dynamics could in turn give insight into the lack of a magnetic field. Large-scale volcanism, lava flows, and evidence of explosive-type volcanism in ancient craters, which would indicate a once less dense atmosphere, could also be detected by the spacecraft. The need for more than one or two mapping cycles is discussed.
