We have used the Parkes Multibeam system and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to assemble a sample of 195 galaxies selected only from their HI signature to avoid biases against un-evolved or low surface brightness objects. The sample, which should be almost entirely free of either misidentification or confusion, includes a wide diversity of galaxies ranging from inchoate, low surface brightness (LSB) dwarfs to giant spirals. We study the contribution of LSB galaxies to the local Universe, find correlations among their properties and use their colour information to explore the star formation histories and physical conditions that produce the observed colours.
