We show some detailed spectral simulations of the X-ray spectra of active galactic nuclei (AGN) expected with the calorimeter (XRS) aboard Astro-E2, to be launched around February 2005. The XRS is expected to revolutionilize X-ray spectroscopy in the Fe K band since it has a spectral resolution a factor of 6 better than the Chandra High Energy Grating (which currently offers the best spectral resolution in that band), combined with a factor of 6 higher throughput. The XRS spectral resolution corresponds to 300 km/s FWHM at 6.4 keV. In the simulations we address some key issues pertaining to measurements of the Fe K emission and absorption features in AGN. Probing strong gravity using the Fe K emission lines is of course one of the principal goals of Astro-E2, and we discuss the sensitivity of the XRS for this based on the simulations. In the soft X-ray band, the XRS resolution is not as good as that of Chandra or XMM gratings but due to the high throughput of XRS, one can study variability of the ionized absorbers in AGN and some simulations are shown to illustrate the XRS sensitivity to this kind of study. This research has been funded by a number of NASA grants.
