Over the last decade, State Science Standards have been based mostly on the National Science Education Standards and the AAAS 2006 Benchmarks for Science Literacy. In the near future, two new groundbreaking National Research Council reports will likely be the next major influence on State Standards: "Taking Science to School: Learning and Teaching Science in Grades K-8" (2007) and its companion "Ready Set Science! Putting Research to Work in K-8 Science Classrooms" (2008). We will review Ready, Set, Science!'s new vision of science in education, its most important recommendations, and how this will likely effect the future of science education. We will review how Space Science and Astronomy are uniquely suited to support this new vision of science education. The New Jersey State Department of Education (NJDOE) is currently in the process of revising their science standards to include recommendations from "Ready Set Science!" We will summarize our work with NJDOE and provide examples of what new standards may look like in Astronomy and Space Science.
