For some purposes, "authentic" can pertain to work that is original research that could lead to publication. In other contexts, "authentic" might mean activities that involve collecting real data and analyzing it, even though the work is by nature of a laboratory exercise, rather than new research. This paper explores the nuances of what people might actually mean by "authentic" and what the implications of that are in a social context for educational projects. The Hands-On Universe project, as related to The NASA Kepler mission as well as the International Astronomical Search Collaboration asteroid search project, is taken to be one form of "authentic" science, and compared with other projects that may or may not be considered "authentic."
