The cosmic microwave background, "the oldest picture of the Universe", is the fossil light from the Big Bang. The picture tells us about the age, geometry, and composition of the Universe, as well as the origin of fluctuations and the earliest moment of the Universe. The Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe, "WMAP", has been mapping the cosmic microwave background and its polarization since the launch on June 30, 2001. This paper summarizes the WMAP first year data and their cosmological implications announced on February 11, 2003.
