The AAS Committee on Employment is charged with facilitating the professional development and employment of astronomers. An important component of the committee's charge is to keep the community, especially students and postdocs, informed of the status of the astronomy job market and provide useful information on how to find jobs.
This special session from the AAS Committee on Employment will provide practical information on the astronomy job market. We will start with an overview of the historical trends in funding and correlation with the job market, moving on to numbers of graduates, numbers of jobs, and where people are getting hired. This will help to provide some perspective of the cycles in funding and the job market. This segment will be followed by a panel discussion with people who hire astronomers both at the faculty and postdoc levels, and hiring managers at government labs and aerospace industries. The panelists will discuss the job search process in their institutions and funding/hiring trends they have seen recently or forecast for the future in their type of institution.
The panel will consist of: Anita Krishnamurthi - University of Maryland/NASA's GSFC, Travis MetCalfe - NCAR, Neil Evans - University of Texas, Bryan Penprase - Pomona College, Yvonne Pendelton - NASA Headquarters, Nancy Evans - SAO and Gary Matthews - ITT Corporation, Space Systems Division.
