Pulsars: Pulse Profiles, Pulsar Magnetospheres: Radiation Mechanisms
Scientific paper
The radio and optical emission of pulsars originate in different regions. The optical and other high energy radiation from the Crab and Vela Pulsars originates close to the velocity of light cylinder; it is curvature radiation from outflowing particles which, in the case of the Crab, provides the energy source for the Crab Nebula. The typical radio emission originates above the magnetic poles and closer to the surface, from a height determined by the plasma density.
