WFPC2 photometry at wavelengths short of 3000A are affected by UV absorbing molecular contamination that accumulates on the cold CCD windows over time. To improve UV throughput, the WFPC2 undergoes periodic "decontaminations": the operating temperature is raised to +22C to dissipate contaminants that built-up on the CCD windows. Monthly decontaminations were conducted during the first 10 years of WFPC2 operations. After June 2003, that frequency was reduced to every 49 - 60 days.
UV throughput changes due to contamination are monitored by observations of the standard star GRW +70D5824. Data taken before and after decontaminations have been compared to determine the rate of throughput decline between decons, as well as to monitor trends over longer timelines.
As part of the close-out calibration efforts, observations of GRW+70D5824 in standard wide-band UV filters, from April 1994 to present, were calibrated with the same version of calwp2, then analyzed to obtain UV throughput changes between decons for specific epochs. This updated information will be used to populate SYNPHOT reference files. WFPC2 calibration pipeline updates are being planned to include contamination rate information in the header files for UV images.
