This paper discusses errors in the critical parts of ground-based optical astrometric instruments (such as meridian circles or astrolabes) which are caused by thermal expansion effect due to the nocturnal temperature drops or daytime temperature rises. These effects include thermal deformation of the objective lens, the effect of gap between the objective lens and its cell, and errors on other parts of the instruments. Errors can also be caused by an imperfection of mercury surface, and changes in refraction due to the effects of environmental factors on the telescope tube and the roof above the observation room. Results obtained in this investigation are applied to the design of a new instrument, the Mark 4 Astrolabe.
