The wavelet transform (WT) is introduced as a mathematical microscope
that is well suited for investigating the local scaling properties of
fractal objects. The WT technique is applied to probability measures on
self-similar Cantor sets and to the golden-mean trajectories on two-tori
at the onset of chaos.
