Spectropolarimetric observations of the red supergiant Mu Cep and the semiregular variable V CVn are analyzed. Changes in linear polarization are found to occur across the TiO bands in both stars. It is suggested that the polarization in V CVn is probably produced by molecular scattering in a pulsating atmosphere that has systematic pole-to-equator temperature differences appropriate for a star with a rotational velocity of not more than 13 km/s. The results indicate that the polarization in Mu Cep is probably produced in an asymmetric scattering envelope in which the absorbing gas and dust are well mixed and the mean grain size, the scattering geometry, or both, varies with distance from the star. It is concluded that the mean particle radius in the outer part of this envelope is at least 0.15 micron if the grains are enstatite.
