The paper describes the design concept and capabilities of a TE(01)-mode millimeter circular waveguide system for use in the Very Large Array (VLA) being built by the National Radio Astronomy Observatory to map the spatial distribution of radio waves emitted by distant astronomical objects. The VLA consists of 27 25-m diam paraboloids arranged along the arms of a 'Y' with 21-km arms. The waveguide system is designed both for collecting information received by individual antennas in an array and routing it back to a central computer and for providing a communications link for control and command signals to point and drive each antenna. For this purpose, a single 60-mm diam waveguide extending along each arm of the 'Y' is sufficient to communicate all signals to and from nine antennas on an arm. Particular attention is given to the waveguide media and installation, waveguide couplers, antenna waveguide, branching network, and waveguide measurement set. After initial test and calibration, new antennas will continue to be added to the waveguide system until full completion in 1981.
