Applications of basic magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) wave theory to solar atmospheric models which result in characteristic time scales are reviewed. Several models which interpret solar pulsations as MHD waves in a coronal loop are addressed, and alternative interpretations of observations are presented. Particular attention is given to similarities of MHD wave-propagation models for the solar atmosphere and the magnetosphere and the different emphasis placed on features of wave behavior in the two disciplines.
